Overview of VA Benefits
There are several types of VA Benefits available. Unfortunately, the laws and eligibility requirements for these benefits are very complex. A full discussion is beyond the scope of this website, and this general information is not intended to provide legal advice. However, the following hopefully gives the reader a brief overview that may be of assistance:
1) Service Connected Compensation: The veteran is awarded monthly monetary benefits for disabilities that were connected (related) to his or her time in the military. For example, a WWII veteran who suffered a hearing loss due because he was a military “gunner” would be entitled to monthly “compensation” because of this disability. The amount of money depends upon the severity of the disability. It is important to understand that many symptoms of a disease or condition may surface many years later. Or, a disability caused by the service may worsen over time, leading to an increased “rating” and additional monthly compensation. Also, there are many conditions that are “presumptive” – meaning that just by nature of having the condition, it is “presumed” to have been caused by military service, resulting in a monthly payment. CLICK HERE for more information about presumptive conditions.
2) Non Service Connected Pension. This “pension” is based on need – NOT an injury. There are basically three types of “pension”, each having different requirements, and paying a different monthly amount. We find that many seniors are eligible for ‘improved pension," typically referred to as “Aid and Attendance” benefits. This "pension" assists veterans and/or their surviving spouses who have limited funds, and high care costs. CLICK HERE for more information regarding Aid & Attendance Benefits.
