Aid & Attendance Benefits ("Improved Pension")
The Veterans Administration offers monthly cash tax-free benefit for veterans and their surviving spouses who have high care costs and meet the eligibility requirements. Aid and Attendance benefits are often referred to as a non-service connected "improved pension". This monthly benefit is intended to assist Veterans and surviving spouses pay for their ongoing, non-reimbursed care expenses. These care costs include the costs of care facilities, in-home caregivers (including non-spouse family members), nursing homes, assisted living facilities, etc.
If you qualify for Aid and Attendance benefits, you could receive the following tax-free monthly benefit (2014 amounts):
Single Veteran: $1,758.00
Married Veteran with Dependent/Spouse: $2,085.00
Surviving Spouse of a Veteran: $1,130.00
BASIC ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
SERVICE DATES
The veteran must have served at least 90 days of active duty service, one day of which must have been during a war-time period.
In general, wartime is:
World War I
World War II - Dec. 7, 1941 - Dec. 31, 1946
Korean War - June 27, 1950 - Jan. 31, 1955
Vietnam War - Aug. 5, 1964 - May 7, 1975 OR February 28, 1961 thru May 7, 1975 (in/Country of Vietnam)
Gulf War - August 2, 1990 through date to be set by law by Presidential Proclamation
DISCHARGE:
The veteran must have received a discharge other than dishonorable.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
The VA uses a "formula" for Aid and Attendance benefits to determine eligibility. The “formula” considers your age, life expectancy, income, assets, and unreimbursed medical expenses. Every applicant is different.
The VA may provide this "tax free monthly pension" to Veterans and/or their surviving spouse to help offset the high cost of care, if the eligibility requirements are met.
